The Ford Mustang we are offering here was built from 2012 to 2014 by the renowned German restoration workshop American Muscle Motorsports & Services for a client who wanted to take part in the Tour Auto in France with this car. For different reasons, he did not take part in the Tour Auto and sold the car to the actual owner.
The inspiration for this project was the Shelby team car from the 1966 Trans Am Championship. The homologation for this kind of car is 1330. Accordingly, the Mustang is a Group 2 touring car that can be entered for the period F (62-65).
Basis for this project was a bodyshell of a Ford Mustang Coupé built in 1964 that was completely stripped and sand blasted. The chassis was stiffened in certain parts and a FIA certified six-point roll cage was installed.
The car is powered by a modified Ford 298 V8 Smallblock engine with 4728ccm mated to a manual 4-speed transmission. According to the restoration shop the engine has an output of round about 400Hp (294 kW). Combined with the low overall weight of ca. 1230 kg this offers an exceptional performance.
The brake system was also upgrade with internally vented 11,3” disc brakes in the front and 10” drum breaks in the rear. The car also has an FT3 safety tank with a capacity of 100 liters installed in the trunk.
A special feature is the fact that the car is not only eligible for the racetrack, but it is also registered as a classic car for regular street use.
About the 1966 Shelby Team car:
In 1966, the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) created a new National Championship category for sedans. In the professional series Trans-American Sedan Championship (in short: „Trans-Am“), a Manufacturer’s Trophy was set up which Ford was highly interested in. The company turned to Shelby American to develop a Group 2 sedan racer from a Mustang. The SCCA’s rules limited the engine capacity to five liters and the wheelbase to 116 inches maximum each. Also, the car had to have four useable seats.
Shelby’s engineers bought a Mustang Notchback from a local dealer, stripped it down completely and built it up again. They incorporated most of the tricks they had developed for the Shelby GT350 models. Right the first tests of the prototype proved that it was only fractually slower than a GT350 R model.
All this effort paid off and the Shelby Mustangs earned points in five out of the seven Trams-Am races in 1966, among them two victories. So Ford took the Manufacturer’s Championship – project goal achieved!
