This car is one of the very rare BMW 502 Baur Coupés, built only 24 times.
After the war, BMW presented its first post-war passenger car, the 501, which was sold from 1952. The large touring saloon met with a positive response and its rounded shapes earned it the nickname "Baroque Angel". However, the 2-litre six-cylinder engine with 62 PS (46 kW) was undersized for the 1.3-ton vehicle.
This is why the new 502 series was presented in Geneva in 1954. Technically it is constructed like the 501. Optically there were some changes: additional chrome parts, standard fog lights, the indicators were replaced by indicators and the interior more luxurious. The difference became even clearer with the panorama rear window introduced in 1955.
The biggest difference to its predecessor, however, was under the hood of the 502, which was the first German post-war production car with a V8 engine. This completely redesigned engine delivered 100 hp (74 kW), which ensured a top speed of 160 km/h – in the mid-fifties, mind you. No wonder that testers attested the vehicle an excellent driving performance.
By the end of production in December 1963, 7,300 units of the 502 had been sold.
The Stuttgart-based body builder Baur had already supported BMW in the areas of body construction and painting in the course of the post-war reconstruction. When BMW set up its own body shop in Munich, Baur focused on the production of individual special bodies, namely Coupé and Cabriolet. The customer ordered a chassis from his BMW dealer, which Baur then fitted with the desired body. The coupés were only built between March and November 1955. According to BMW Classic, only 24 coupés were produced. Therefore, these vehicles belong to the rarest BMW classics of the post-war period.
The car on offer was delivered in August 1955 to Lisbon. The first registration took place on 22 September 1955.
An old invoice from the 1970s and the old Portuguese registration documents are still available for the history.
The car was repainted many years ago but is otherwise in a largely untouched original condition. The interior was also repainted but is still the first original interior of the car.
This is a very rare opportunity to purchase one of these exceptionally rare BMW 502 Baur Coupés.
The car is available for an inspection by appointment only in 33415 Verl, Germany. We are happy to show you the car and the documents and have a lift available as well.
